Crochet Shell Stitch for Beginners

Today, I’m excited to introduce you to one of my all-time favorite crochet stitch patterns – the Shell Stitch.

What makes this stitch so appealing to me is the exquisite texture it adds to your creations, coupled with its ease of learning and retention. It was one of the very first stitch patterns I mastered when embarking on my crochet journey, and I continue to rely on it to this day! Despite its intricate appearance, this stitch is surprisingly straightforward to pick up. With its charming scalloped design, it has solidified its place as one of my top stitch choices due to its simplicity and beauty.

Numerous variations of the shell stitch pattern exist, but the one I’m sharing with you today results in a snug, textured fabric with minimal gaps. This particular version is ideal for crafting warm blankets and washcloths that are not only functional but also exceptionally beautiful.

Once you’ve mastered the Crochet Shell Stitch, you can use it to create a wide range of projects, even as a beginner. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• A Crochet Hook (I used an H/5.00 mm)
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle

Tutorial

Row 1: To commence our swatch, start with a row of single crochet. You can either begin with a chain and single crochet in each chain stitch or try one of my preferred crochet techniques, the foundation single crochet stitch.Whichever method you choose, ensure you end up with a multiple of six stitches plus one. For this sample, I initiated with 31 single crochet stitches, which equals five shells across.

Round 1

Row 2: With our first row of single crochet ready, we’re all set to delve into our pattern! Begin the second row by chaining one and working a single crochet in the same stitch. Next, skip two stitches, and execute 5 double crochet stitches in the following stitch.

Skip two stitches and work a single crochet in the subsequent stitch. Your initial shell is now formed! Continue the pattern of skipping 2 stitches, working 5 double crochets in the next stitch, and skipping 2 stitches, followed by a single crochet in the subsequent stitch, until you reach the row’s end.

Row 2

Row 3: Row 3 closely resembles Row 2, except we begin with a half shell this time, positioning the shells we crochet in this row between the shells from the preceding row.

Start by chaining 3 and working two double crochets in the same stitch. Then, work a single crochet in the middle double crochet of the first shell from the previous row. This forms your first half shell!

Work five double crochets in the next single crochet (between the shells in the previous row), and then work a single crochet in the middle double crochet of the next shell.  Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the row. Finally, work 3 double crochets in the last single crochet stitch of the previous row.

Round 3

For the subsequent rows, simply repeat Rows 2 and 3 until your piece reaches the desired length. It’s a breeze!
