Mosaic crochet, a captivating and versatile technique, is making waves in the crafting world. It combines the artful designs of mosaic tiles with the cozy, handmade charm of crochet. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a beginner looking for a new challenge, mosaic crochet offers a wonderful way to create intricate and eye-catching patterns. In this blog post, we’ll dive into the basics of mosaic crochet, explore different patterns, and share tips to help you get started on your mosaic crochet journey.
What is Mosaic Crochet?
Mosaic crochet is a technique that uses two or more colors to create intricate geometric patterns. Unlike traditional colorwork, such as Fair Isle or intarsia, mosaic crochet is worked in rows with one color at a time. This makes it easier to manage multiple colors and achieve complex designs without carrying yarn across the back of your work.
The beauty of mosaic crochet lies in its simplicity and the stunning results it produces. By following a chart and working basic stitches, you can create elaborate designs that look far more complex than they are to execute.

Row 1: in color A. Start with a sc foundation chain in multiples of 8 for the width that you want. My project is 41 cm/16” wide so I made my foundation chain this length.
Row 2: start at the beginning of the row in color B. Don’t turn your work. Ch 1, *sc blo in the first 3 stitches, drop down dc in the next stitch, sc blo in the next 7 stitches, drop down dc in the next, sc blo in the next 7 stitches, drop down dc in the next*.
