The ocean has always inspired quilters with its movement, colors, and timeless beauty. The Batik Ocean Waves Quilt Pattern brings those inspirations into fabric form, using shades of blue, cream, and golden tan batiks to create a design that ripples like waves across the quilt top.

The Batik Ocean Waves Quilt Pattern is more than just a sewing project it’s a journey into color and movement. Inspired by the natural rhythm of the sea, this design transforms simple triangle units into a striking composition of waves and hidden pinwheels. Whether you stick with classic batiks or experiment with modern prints, this quilt will bring energy and elegance to any space.

Originally inspired by the Ship Shape design from Bonnie Blue Quilts, this pattern transforms simple triangle-squares into stunning pinwheel effects when assembled. The result is a bold, elegant quilt that measures 60½” square—perfect for displaying as a centerpiece in your home or gifting to someone special.

Materials You’ll Need

To create this quilt, you’ll need a combination of cream, blue, and brown batiks along with a touch of golden tan for contrast. The original design calls for fabrics from the Tonga Coco Berry collection by Timeless Treasures, but you can adapt it with fabrics from your own stash.

  • 1¼ yards cream batik (blocks, border #2)

  • 1⅓ yards assorted blue batiks (blocks, border #2)

  • ⅜ yard golden tan batik (blocks, border #3)

  • ⅞ yard light brown batik (blocks)

  • ½ yard dark brown batik (border #1)

  • 1¾ yards dark blue batik (border #4, binding)

  • 3⅞ yards backing fabric

  • 69″ square batting

  • Cutting & Piecing

    • Cream Batik: Squares and small triangles for block backgrounds.

    • Blue Batiks: Squares and small triangles for contrast.

    • Golden Tan Batik: Accent triangles and border strips.

    • Light Brown Batik: Large triangles for block framing.

    • Dark Brown & Dark Blue Batiks: Borders and binding.

The quilt is built from triangle-squares (HSTs)—276 blue units and 20 golden tan units—that are then assembled into Ocean Waves Blocks A and B. When arranged together, these blocks form a captivating wave-like effect across the quilt top.

    Borders & Assembly

    1. Quilt Center: Alternate Ocean Waves Blocks A and B in four rows, rotating them to form movement.

    2. Border #1: Dark brown strips frame the center.

    3. Border #2: Rows of triangle-squares add texture and continuity.

    4. Border #3: Golden tan strips for a sharp accent.

    5. Border #4: Wide dark blue batik strips to finish the quilt.

Finally, layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Quilt as desired and bind with the dark blue batik.

    Why You’ll Love This Pattern

The Batik Ocean Waves Quilt is a celebration of color and motion. The golden tan triangles in the corners of each block create hidden pinwheels, adding a playful surprise to the finished design.
