Bear Paw Classic Block Free Pattern

The Bear Paw Classic Block is one of the most beloved traditional quilt blocks in American quilting history. With its bold “claw” shapes and strong geometric layout, this block symbolizes strength and wilderness while maintaining a warm, homey feel. Whether stitched in classic red and white or modern soft pastels, the Bear Paw always makes a striking statement.

This block is perfect for traditional quilt lovers who appreciate vintage charm, but it’s also incredibly versatile for modern quilters looking to experiment with color placement. The layered construction using Half Square Triangles and simple squares makes it a fun and satisfying block to assemble.

Today, I’m sharing how to make the 14 ½” x 14 ½” unfinished Bear Paw block, and at the end of this article, you’ll be able to download the free PDF pattern.

Cutting Instructions (One Block)

From Block Fabric:

  • 4 – 4 ½” squares (A)

  • 8 – 2 ⅞” squares (B)

  • 1 – 2 ½” square (C)

From Background Fabric:

  • 8 – 2 ⅞” squares (F)

  • 4 – 2 ½” x 6 ½” rectangles (G)

  • 4 – 2 ½” squares (H)

(Cutting details from page 1)

Step 1: Make the Half Square Triangle Units

  1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2 ⅞” background square (F).

  2. Layer one Fabric F square right sides together with one Fabric B square.

  3. Stitch ¼” away from both sides of the drawn line.

  4. Cut apart on the marked line.

  5. Press open.

You will create 16 Half Square Triangle units, each measuring 2 ½” x 2 ½”.

(Construction instructions from page 1)

Step 2: Assemble the Claw Units

Using the HST units:

  • Sew two HST units together to create a Claw Unit measuring 2 ½” x 4 ½”.

  • Make 4 Top Claw Units.

  • Make 4 Side Claw Units.

Pay close attention to the orientation of the triangles so the “claws” point outward correctly.

(Unit measurements from page 1)

Step 3: Make the Bear Paw Units

For each Bear Paw Unit:

  • Sew together:

    • 1 Fabric H square

    • 1 Top Claw Unit

    • 1 Side Claw Unit

    • 1 Fabric A square

Each Bear Paw Unit should measure 6 ½” x 6 ½”.

Make 4 Bear Paw Units.

(Assembly details from page 2)

Step 4: Create the Middle Unit

  • Sew one 2 ½” x 6 ½” rectangle (G) to each side of the 2 ½” square (C).

  • This forms the Middle Unit, measuring 2 ½” x 14 ½”.

(Middle unit construction from page 2)

Step 5: Assemble the Full Block

  1. Sew two Bear Paw Units together with one Fabric G rectangle to form a Half Bear Paw Block Unit measuring 6 ½” x 14 ½”.

  2. Make two Half Bear Paw Block Units.

  3. Sew the two halves together with the Middle Unit in between.

Your completed Bear Paw Block should measure 14 ½” x 14 ½” unfinished.

(Final assembly instructions from page 2)

Color & Design Ideas

The Bear Paw block looks stunning in many combinations:

  • Classic red and white for a traditional farmhouse look

  • Earth tones (rust, forest green, tan) for a rustic cabin feel

  • Soft blush and beige for a romantic vintage quilt

  • Bold modern contrast like black and mustard

When multiple Bear Paw blocks are joined, the claws create a dynamic secondary pattern across the quilt top.
