Materials Needed

  • Yarn: 150 yards of worsted weight yarn (use more if you want a longer or slouchier hat)

  • Hooks: Size J (6.0 mm) for the hat body, Size H (5.0 mm) for the ribbing

  • Other Tools: Yarn needle for weaving in ends

  • Gauge

    • 3 double crochets with J hook = 1 inch

  • Height is not critical, since you can simply add more rounds for a taller hat

  • Special Notes

This pattern uses front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc). If you haven’t worked these stitches before, there are many excellent tutorials and YouTube videos available. It’s best to be comfortable with these stitches before starting.

For joining each round: slip stitch into the first front post double crochet of the previous round (or the beginning chain-2 of Round 1). Then chain 2 and work a fpdc into the same stitch. This technique hides the chain and creates a smoother, less noticeable join.
