Why Cotton?

Cotton yarn is a fantastic choice for this motif for several reasons:

Breathability: Cotton is a natural fiber that allows your projects to breathe, making it perfect for items that will be used in warmer weather.
Durability: Cotton is strong and durable, ensuring that your projects will last for years.
Versatility: With its smooth texture and wide range of colors, cotton yarn is suitable for a variety of projects and styles.

Abbreviations (US terms):
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch

Instructions

Make 6 chains and join them into a ring with 1 sl st in the first ch.
Ch 4 (counts as 1 sc + 1 ch), 1 sc around the ch ring, 1 ch. Repeat between * until you have 12 sc with 1 ch between them around the ring. Finish with 1 sl st in the 3rd starting ch of the round.

FLOWER PETAL
Start with 4 ch in the nearest ch. Make 1 sl st in the same ch, but wait before pulling the yarn through the last time. Make 1 sc in the same ch, and when you pull the yarn through the last time, do it through all the stitches on the hook. = Your first petal!
Ch 3 (this will be the space between each petal). In the next ch: make 3 sl sts without pulling the yarn through the last time until you have everything (1 st + the 3 incomplete sl sts) on the hook, ch 3.

Repeat between * throughout the round. Finish with 1 sl st at the top of the first petal.
Then, continue with 1 more sl st to the nearest ch.

FRAMING
Note! Only the first square is crocheted on all four sides.

Ch 3 (counts as the 1st dc), 4 dc, ch 5, and 5 dc in the same dc. These stitches form your first corner. 1 sc in the next ch, ch 5, 1 sc in the next ch.
Next corner: 5 dc, ch 5, 5 dc. 1 sc in the next ch, ch 5, 1 sc in the next ch. Repeat between * 2 more times.
Finish the round with 1 sc in the 1st dc.

When joining multiple squares, the technique changes slightly. The squares are joined at the points where we made a ch-5 space.
The corners and sides that need to be joined with another square are not made with ch 5, but with ch 2, 1 sc around the corresponding ch of the other square, ch 2.
