In this project, we’ll be making a rectangular shawl or scarf using a beautiful new stitch pattern. Let’s take it step by step — and you’re going to love how it turns out!

Today we are going to learn, step by step, how to make a beautiful rectangular shawl (or scarf) using a new stitch that is super pretty and easy to do. If you love trying out new crochet ideas and are always looking for elegant and cozy projects, you will love this tutorial!

The yarns I’m using are medium-thick wool, ideal for mid-season or winter pieces. But you can adapt them with any type of yarn you prefer — cotton, acrylic or even a mix of the two — the important thing is that you feel comfortable creating with what you have on hand. 🧶✨

Crochet Rectangular Shawl Tutorial

🧶 Materials Needed:
Medium-weight (worsted) yarn – you can use any yarn you love.
Crochet hook suitable for your yarn.
Scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

✨ Step 1: Foundation Chain

  1. Start with a slip knot.

  • Chain multiples of 14 until you reach the desired width or length of your shawl:

    • For a scarf: approx. 150–170 cm in length.

  • For a shawl: approx. 50–70 cm in width.

  • At the end of your foundation chain, add 8 extra chains.

  • ✨ Step 2: Row 1 – Double Crochet Foundation

    1. Yarn over, skip the first 3 chains, and work 1 double crochet into the 4th chain from the hook.

    2. Continue working 1 double crochet in each chain across the row.

    3. At the end of the row, you should have one double crochet in each chain.

    ✨ Step 3: Row 2 – Starting the Pattern

    1. Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), turn your work.

    2. Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 4 stitches.
→ You now have 5 double crochets at the beginning of the row.

    3. Chain 3, yarn over, skip 4 stitches, and in the 5th stitch, make:

      • 1 double crochet

      • Chain 2

      • 1 more double crochet (this forms a V-stitch).

    4. Chain 3, skip 4 stitches, and in the 5th, work 1 single crochet.

    5. Chain 3, skip 3 stitches, and in the 4th, work 1 single crochet.

    6. Chain 3, skip 4 stitches, and in the 5th, make another V-stitch.

    7. Repeat the pattern across the row, and end with 5 double crochets.

✨ Step 4: Row 3 – Building the Flower Clusters

    1. Chain 3, turn.

    2. Work 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches (5 in total).

    3. Chain 3, and in the V-stitch from the previous row, work:

      • 6 double crochets under the first side of the V.

      • 3 double crochets in the center (between both V arms).

      • 6 double crochets under the second arm of the V.

    4. Chain 3, skip to the center chain space between the two single crochets in the previous row, and work 1 single crochet.

    5. Chain 3, then repeat the same flower cluster into the next V-stitch.

    6. Continue this across the row, and finish with 5 double crochets.

    ✨ Step 5: Repeat Rows

    • Row 4 begins the repeat. After the final 5 double crochets, chain 3 and turn.

    • Continue building the flower clusters and working into the center chain spaces.

    • Always begin and end each row with 5 double crochets to maintain the border.

    💡 Tips:

    • You can use solid or variegated yarn for different effects.

    • For a lighter shawl, try using cotton yarn.

    • Steam block your shawl after finishing to even out the stitches and enhance the lace effect.

    📌 Final Notes:

This shawl pattern is versatile—you can use it to make scarves, cardigans, or even a light baby blanket by adjusting the number of foundation chains and rows.
