Jacob’s Ladder Block Pattern

The Jacob’s Ladder Block Pattern is one of those timeless quilt blocks that never goes out of style. With its bold diagonal movement and strong contrast between light and dark fabrics, this block creates a striking visual effect that looks intricate but is surprisingly beginner-friendly. If you love classic quilt designs with vintage appeal, this block is a must-try.

Traditionally associated with antique quilts, the Jacob’s Ladder block has been passed down through generations. Its geometric layout creates a beautiful “stepping” illusion when blocks are placed together, making it perfect for everything from table toppers to full-size quilts. Whether you prefer traditional color combinations or modern palettes, this pattern adapts beautifully to your fabric choices.

Today, I’m sharing how to make a 12 ½” x 12 ½” unfinished Jacob’s Ladder quilt block, and at the end of this article, you’ll be able to download the free PDF pattern.

Step 1: Make the Half Square Triangle (HST) Units

    1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 4 ⅞” background square.

    2. Place one background square right sides together with one print square.

    3. Stitch ¼” away from both sides of the drawn line.

    4. Cut apart directly on the drawn line.

You will have 4 Half Square Triangle units, each measuring 4 ½” x 4 ½”.

(Construction details referenced from page 2 of the PDF)

Step 2: Make the Strip Sets

    1. Sew one 2 ½” x 15” print rectangle to one 2 ½” x 15” background rectangle.

    2. Press seam as desired.

    3. The strip set should measure 4 ½” x 15”.

    4. Make two strip sets total.

    5. Subcut each strip set into five 2 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles.

    Each small unit should measure 2 ½” x 4 ½”.

(Measurements and assembly from page 1)

Step 3: Create the Four Patch Units

    1. Sew two of the 2 ½” x 4 ½” units together.

    2. Press seam.

    3. Repeat to create four patch units measuring 4 ½” x 4 ½”.

Make a total of five Four Patch units.

    (Assembly instructions from page 1)

Step 4: Assemble the Jacob’s Ladder Block

    Arrange your units in a 3 x 3 layout:

    • Position the Half Square Triangle units so the diagonals create the “ladder” effect.

    • Alternate with the Four Patch units to form the stepping pattern.

    • Sew rows together.

    • Join rows to complete the block.

    Your finished block should measure 12 ½” x 12 ½” unfinished.
