Portable and Relaxing: Creating granny squares is a portable and relaxing crochet project. Many crocheters enjoy making them during commutes, while watching TV, or in spare moments.
Tutorial:
An alternative approach is to create a foundation ring by chaining four and then joining it.
Round 1: Within the ring, single crochet (SC), chain two, (3 double crochets (DC), chain one) repeated three times, followed by two DC. Complete the round by joining with a slip stitch into the chain located directly above the initial SC.
Round 2: Start by performing a slip stitch in the same chain space, then FLIP YOUR WORK to the opposite side. In the same space, work (SC, chain two, 3 DC). Continue with (3 DC, chain one, 3 DC) in all three other spaces around. Conclude with 2 DC in the first space, and join with a slip stitch to the chain directly above the initial SC.
Round 3 (Pattern Round): Begin with a slip stitch in the same space, and FLIP YOUR WORK OVER to the opposite side. Work (SC, chain two, 3 DC) in the same space. Proceed with 3 DC in all spaces across, maintaining (3 DC, chain one, 3 DC) in the corners around the blanket until you reach the first space. In this space, work 2 DC and finalize the round by joining with a slip stitch in the chain directly above the initial SC. When your work reaches the desired size, cut the yarn and finish off.
I prefer to conclude my work on an odd round so that both the first and last rounds face upward.
If you are using multiple colors, trim and finish off after each join. Then, flip your work over, attach yarn in any corner, and continue crocheting as usual.
This method, involving the flipping of work to alternate sides, omitting chains between 3 DC groups, and working only one chain in the corners, is a reliable way to achieve perfectly straight-edged granny squares. Without these adjustments, you may end up with a distorted, twisted center and a loosely structured result. 😉
In the picture below, I added a reverse single crochet (SC) round around the square, resulting in a tidy and polished finish.
