Materials Needed
To create the full Pineapple Fruit Quilt, you’ll need:
-
4 ½ yards background fabric (white or cream suggested)
-
½ yard scrappy yellow fabrics (5 blocks)
-
½ yard scrappy turquoise fabrics (5 blocks)
-
⅜ yard scrappy pink fabrics (4 blocks)
-
⅜ yard scrappy orange fabrics (4 blocks)
-
¾ yard scrappy green fabrics (tops of pineapples)
-
⅝ yard binding fabric
-
5 ¼ yards backing fabric (or 2 yards of 108” wide backing)
-
67” x 90” batting
Each block requires 22 half-square triangles (HSTs), made using the simple 2-at-a-time method.
Cutting Guide
Here’s a quick breakdown of the cutting process:
-
From yellow, turquoise, pink, and orange fabrics: cut 3” squares for pineapple bodies.
-
From green fabrics: cut 3” squares for the pineapple tops.
-
From background fabric: cut 3” squares, 2 ½” squares, sashing strips (3 ½” x 12 ½”), cornerstone squares, and setting triangles.
-
From binding fabric: cut 8 strips, 2 ½” wide.
Sewing the Pineapple Blocks
-
Make HSTs – Pair scrappy squares with background squares and sew using the 2-at-a-time method. Press seams toward the darker fabric. Trim to 2 ½” if needed.
-
Block Layout – Arrange 22 HST units with background squares to form the pineapple design.
-
Assemble the Block – Sew units in rows, then join rows together. Add 2 ½” background strips to the sides. Trim to 12 ½”.
Repeat the process to create:
-
5 yellow pineapple blocks
-
5 turquoise pineapple blocks
-
4 pink pineapple blocks
-
4 orange pineapple blocks
Assembling the Quilt Top
-
Arrange all blocks on point with sashing strips and cornerstone squares between them.
-
Add side and corner setting triangles for a clean frame.
-
Sew rows together, alternating blocks and sashing rows.
Finishing the Quilt
-
Layer quilt top, batting, and backing to create a quilt sandwich.
-
Baste with pins or spray.
-
Quilt as desired—straight line quilting works beautifully on this design.
-
Bind with 2 ½” strips using your favorite binding method.
