Step-by-Step instructions :

Round 1: Begin with a magic loop.
Ch3 (equals a double crochet), Ch1, DC, Ch1, [DC, Ch1, DC, Ch1]*3.
Join the last chain to the first DC.

Round 2: Slip stitch into the first chain space.
In the chain space, Ch3 (equals DC), DC, Ch1, 2DC, Ch1, 2DC, Ch1.
Skip the next chain and double crochet. Crochet [2DC, Ch1, 2DC, Ch1, 2DC, Ch1] into the following chain space. Repeat this pattern 2 more times.
Join the last chain to the first DC.

Round 3: Slip stitch into the space between the two double crochets (i.e., between the first pair of double crochets).
Ch3 (equals DC) and DC in the same stitch, Ch1.
Skip the chain and double crochet, then crochet 3DC, Ch1 between the two double crochets from the previous round.
Skip the chain and double crochet, then 2DC between the two double crochets from the previous round, Ch2.

Ch3 (equivalent to a double crochet) and DC in the same stitch. In the next stitch, DC, Ch1.
Skip the chain and double crochet. In between the next pairs of double crochets, work 2DC, DC, DC, 2DC, Ch1.
Skip the chain and double crochet. In between the next two double crochets, work 1DC. In the next stitch, work 2DC, Ch3.

In the next stitch, work 2DC, Ch3] repeated 3 times.
Join the last chain to the first DC.

Round 7: From the join of the previous round, into the next chain space, create a shell ([shell = (Tr, Ch1) 7 times + one extra Tr, all into the same chain space]). In other words, make 8 Tr to form the shell. Slip stitch after the 3rd double crochet stitch to join the shell.
Create the next shell in the same manner as the first.
2 SC into the chain space, then slip stitch into the double crochet after the 3 chain stitches. Repeat this entire procedure 3 more times.
Join the first TR.

Round 8: Change color.
The heart shapes are now complete. Identify the top of the hearts as the left arch and right arch.
On the left arch, skip the treble, chain, treble, and start in the next chain. Ch2 (equals SC), then work another 9 SC over the arch (for a total of 10 SC), with the last SC going into the second last treble of the arch.
At the corner, work 2 Tr into the first single crochet, then DTr (Double Treble), 2 Ch, DTr into the middle single crochet, and 2 Tr into the last single crochet.
Join to the right arch at the second chain (i.e., skip the treble, chain, treble, and start at the next chain) with a SC. Work SC in the next 9 stitches across the arch (for a total of 10 SC), with the last single crochet into the top of the second last treble.
Ch2, Tr into the stitch in the middle of the V (between the left and right arch), Ch2, skip the treble, chain, treble, and then [10 SC with the last SC going into the second last treble of the arch. At the corner, work 2 Tr into the first single crochet, DTr, 2 Ch, DTr into the middle single crochet, and 2 Tr into the last single crochet. Join to the arch at the second chain (i.e., skip the treble, chain, treble, and start at the next chain) with a SC. Work SC in the next 9 stitches (for a total of 10 SC), with the last single crochet into the top of the second last treble. Ch2, Tr into the stitch in the middle of the V (between the left and right arch), Ch2, skip the treble, chain, treble] repeated 3 times. Join the last chain to the first SC.

Round 9: Ch3 (equivalent to DC) in the first single crochet on the left arch. In the remaining 9 single crochets across the arch, work HDC, SC, SC, SC, HDC, DC, DC, TR, TR, then DTr, DTr, DTr. In the corner (2DTr, Ch3, 2DTr) in the chain space. Work DTr in the double treble from the previous round, then DTr, DTr, Tr, Tr, DC, DC, HDC, SC, SC, SC, HDC, DC, 2 DC in the chain space, and 2 DC in the second chain space.
Repeat the pattern in brackets [ ] for the entire round.
Join the last DC to the first DC.
