The Which-Way Filet Blanket Crochet Tutorial

Today, I’m sharing a pattern that I absolutely fell in love with from the very first stitch – the Which Way Filet Blanket. This blanket is not only visually striking with its bold geometric design, but it’s also surprisingly easy to make. The pattern creates a beautiful maze-like effect using the filet crochet technique, giving you a project that looks complex but is totally doable, even if you’re a beginner.

What makes it extra special? It’s worked in the round, starting from the center and growing outward into a perfect square. And get this – it’s made using only two repeating rows! That’s right – once you get the hang of it, you’ll be in the crochet zone, relaxing and watching your masterpiece grow without constantly needing to check the pattern.

For this project, I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn, but you can use any yarn you like. I do recommend sticking with a solid color so the filet design really pops and you get the full effect of those eye-catching lines. As for the hook, I went with a comfy 5.5 mm (I-9) – but feel free to adjust for your yarn and tension.

  3. Into the ring:

    • 2 dc, ch 3

    • 2 dc, ch 3

    • 2 dc, ch 3

    • 1 dc

  4. Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of beginning ch-5.

  5. Slip stitch into the next chain-3 space to begin the next round.

🔁 Round 2:

  1. Ch 5, 2 dc into same ch-3 space (corner).

  2. Dc in each of the next 2 dc.

  3. 2 dc into the next ch-3 space.

  4. Ch 3, repeat around.

  5. Final dc in the last space, slip stitch to 3rd ch of the starting ch-5.

  6. Slip stitch into corner space.

Each side now has 6 dc separated by ch 3 corners.

🔁 Round 3 (Start of the 2-Round Repeat):

  1. Ch 5, 2 dc into same space (corner).

  2. Ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc into the next ch-3 space.

  3. Ch 3, repeat around.

  4. Final dc into last space, slip stitch to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5.

  5. Slip stitch to next corner space.

🔁 Round 4:

  1. Ch 5, 2 dc into corner.

  2. Dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-2 space (making 6 dc again).

  3. Ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in ch-2 space.

  4. Ch 3, repeat around.

  5. Slip stitch to 3rd ch of starting chain, slip stitch to next corner space.

🌟 Pattern Notes:

  • Continue alternating Round 3 and Round 4 for the blanket.

  • Each side increases by a set of 6 dc with every two rounds.

  • Always use ch 3 for corners.

  • Using a solid color yarn helps show off the filet detail beautifully.

🧵 Final Thoughts:

This blanket grows steadily from the center out and creates a hypnotic “which way” visual effect. It’s great for stash-busting with solids, and the simple 2-round repeat makes it a great relaxing project.
