Today’s project is a gorgeous turban hat, crocheted in 3D braided leaf stitch using Tunisian crochet techniques. We’ll also create the flower that decorates it. This stunning design is adaptable to all sizes, making it perfect for everyone, from newborns to adults.
Materials Needed
120 grams of yarn in light pink (or your preferred color).
3 mm crochet hook.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Starting with the Base Circle
Slip Knot and First Round:
Begin with a slip knot.
Crochet 16 double crochet (DC) stitches into the slip knot loop.
Chain 3 to start (counts as the first DC), and then work 15 more double crochets into the loop.
Once you have 16 DCs, close the round with a slip stitch in the first DC.
Second Round:
Chain 3 (counts as the first DC).
Work 2 DCs in each stitch from the previous round.
You’ll end with 32 stitches.
Third Round:
Chain 3.
In the first stitch, work 2 DCs (increase).
In the next stitch, work 1 DC (no increase).
Repeat this pattern: 1 increase, 1 DC, around the circle.
At the end of this round, you’ll have 48 stitches.
Fourth Round:
Chain 3.
Work 2 DCs in the first stitch, then 1 DC in the next 2 stitches.
Repeat the pattern: 2 DCs in one stitch, 1 DC in the next two stitches, around the circle.
This round will give you 64 stitches, suitable for a newborn size.
Adjusting the Size
For larger sizes, continue increasing as follows:
Fifth Round: Work 2 DCs in one stitch, followed by 3 single DCs. Repeat around.
Sixth Round: Work 2 DCs in one stitch, followed by 4 single DCs. Repeat around.
Each round increases the number of single DCs between the increases by 1.
Baby size: Stop after 3 or 4 rounds.
Child size: Stop after 5 or 6 rounds.
Adult size: Continue until you have 96 stitches.
Creating the 3D Braided Leaf Design
Leaf Formation (Tunisian Technique)
Foundation for the Leaf Stitch:
Chain 2.
Insert your hook into the front post of the next DC (from the previous round), and pull up a loop.
Yarn over and pull through, leaving the loop on your hook.
Building the Leaf:
Chain 1 (increase).
Insert your hook into the next post stitch, pull up a loop, and repeat the process.
Each increase adds another “branch” to the leaf.
Leaf Sizes:
Small Leaf: Work up to 4 loops (4 stitches).
Medium Leaf: Work up to 5 loops (5 stitches).
Large Leaf: Work up to 6 loops (6 stitches).
Completing the Leaf:
Once you reach the desired size, pull through all the loops on your hook and slip stitch to secure the leaf.
Skip the next stitch to leave space for the next leaf.
Repeat the Leaf Design:
Chain 2 and begin the next leaf in the same manner.
Continue around the hat, ensuring the leaves align with the multiple of stitches in the base (e.g., multiples of 6 for large leaves).
Assembling the Hat
Once the leaves are complete, crochet evenly around the edges to smooth out the design.
If desired, add a decorative flower to the side of the turban:
Crochet a small flower with a simple spiral or petal design.
Attach securely with a yarn needle or by crocheting it directly onto the turban.
Video Tutorial:
This turban hat is versatile and can be customized with different yarn colors, flower designs, and leaf sizes. The 3D braided leaf stitch gives it a unique, textured look that is sure to print.
Feel free to experiment with the pattern and adapt it to your liking. If you have any questions, leave a comment, and I’ll be happy to help.
Happy crocheting! đŸ’•
