Round 1: Begin by chaining 31. In the 4th chain from the hook, work 2 double crochets (2 DC), chain 1 (1 ch), 3 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC. This creates the starting corner. Skip the next 2 chains (2 ch) and then, *work 3 DC, skip 2 chains (2 ch). Repeat from * until you reach the last chain (ch). In the last chain, work 3 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC (this creates the corner on the opposite side of the chain). Now, working on the opposite side of the chain, skip 2 chains (2 ch) and repeat the pattern: *3 DC, skip 2 chains (2 ch). Continue until you return to the beginning and slip stitch (sl st) to the 3rd chain (ch-3) to close the round.
Round 2: Slip stitch (sl st) into the next 2 double crochets (2 DC). Next, work a single crochet (sc), chain 3 (ch-3), sc into the corner chain-1 space (ch-1 sp), chain 3 (ch-3), skip 3 DC, sc, ch 3, sc into the next corner chain-1 space. Continue with the pattern: *ch 3, skip 3 DC, sc in the gap between the next DC group. Repeat * until you reach the next chain-1 space (ch-1 sp). Here, work a single crochet (sc), chain 3 (ch-3), sc, and then repeat the pattern from * once more. Keep going until you return to the beginning and slip stitch (sl st) to the 1st single crochet (sc) to close the round.
Round 3: Slip stitch (sl st) into the corner chain-3 space (ch-3 space). Next, chain 3 (ch-3), work 2 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC into the corner space. Work 3 DC into the next chain-3 space, 3 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC into the next corner chain-3 space. Continue with the pattern: *3 DC into the chain-3 space. Repeat * until you reach the next corner chain-3 space. Here, work 3 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC into the space and then repeat the pattern from * until you reach the beginning. Finally, slip stitch (sl st) to the chain-3 (ch-3) to close the round.
Round 4: Slip stitch (sl st) into the next 2 DC, then work a single crochet (sc), chain 3 (ch-3), sc into the corner chain-1 space. Chain 3 (ch-3) and repeat the pattern: *skip 3 DC, sc in the gap, chain 3 (ch-3). Continue this pattern until you reach the chain-1 space (ch-1 sp). Here, work a single crochet (sc), chain 3 (ch-3), sc, and then repeat the pattern from * once more. Continue around until you reach the beginning. Finally, slip stitch (sl st) to the first single crochet (sc) to close the round.
Round 5: Slip stitch (sl st) into the corner chain-3 space (ch-3 space). Chain 3 (ch-3), work 2 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC into the corner space. Next, work 3 DC into the chain-3 space, then 3 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC into the next corner chain-3 space. Continue with the pattern: *3 DC into the chain-3 space to reach the next corner, 3 DC, 1 ch, 3 DC into the space. Repeat * until you reach the beginning. Finally, slip stitch (sl st) to the chain-3 (ch-3) to close the round.
Continue repeating alternating rounds 4 and 5 until you reach your desired size, ending with a round 4.
Border: Turn the work to the wrong side. Start in the corner with *ch-3. Here, work a single crochet (sc), half-double crochet (hdc), double crochet (DC), half-double crochet (hdc), and single crochet (sc). Repeat this pattern * until you reach the corner, and in the corner space, work a single crochet (sc), half-double crochet (hdc), double crochet (DC), double crochet (DC), half-double crochet (hdc), and a single crochet (sc). Repeat * again around to the beginning. Finally, slip stitch (sl st) to the beginning single crochet (sc) and finish off.
