Berrylicious Square Pattern

I think everyone already knows that I love square patterns, right? And today we’re going to talk about a pattern that I love, Berrylicious Square.

The Berrylicious Square is a beautiful crochet square that, as you can see in the image, was made with red thread, and this made this pattern even more beautiful. So my friends, grab your needles and yarn and let’s crochet this beautiful square and make beautiful projects with it!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Finished Size: Motif: 12″ (30.5 cm) square

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in fundamental crochet stitches: chain, double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet, and slip stitch.
  • Ability to crochet in the round, increase stitches, crochet in the back loop only, skip stitches, and crochet in chain spaces.
  • Familiarity with special stitches: bob, FPsc (video tutorials linked in the pattern), and the V-stitch.

This 12-inch (30.5 cm) square pattern commences with a delightful, textured berrylicious center and concludes with one of my cherished crochet stitch techniques: the V stitch.

Pattern Notes:

This square is crocheted as a continuous round piece with the right side always facing up. The initial chain 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

Materials:

  • 601 yards of Maximum Red Wire
  • Crochet hook size J-10/6 mm, or an appropriately sized hook to match the gauge
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations:

  • BL: Back Loop Only
  • bob: Bobble Stitch – [Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 4 times in the same stitch, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on the hook.
  • ch: Chain
  • dc: Double Crochet
  • FPsc: Front Post Single Crochet – Insert the hook from the front around the back to the front of the stitch in the previous round, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops.
  • hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • rep: Repeat
  • Rnd(s): Round(s)
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • sk: Skip
  • sl st: Slip Stitch
  • sp: Space
  • st(s): Stitch(es)
  • v-st: V-Stitch – (Double Crochet, chain 1, Double Crochet) in the indicated stitch or space. Each V-Stitch counts as 3 stitches in the pattern.
  • yo: Yarn Over

Pattern Instructions:

Start with a chain of 4, skip 3 chains, and slip stitch into the next chain to form a ring.

Round 1: Begin with a chain 1.
Work 12 double crochet stitches into the ring.
Join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet. (Total: 12 stitches)

Round 2: Chain 1.
In the first stitch, work 2 double crochet stitches.
Continue around by alternating between 2 double crochet stitches and a chain 1 space until you reach the last stitch.
In the last stitch, work 2 double crochet stitches.
Join with a single crochet (which also counts as a chain-1 space) to the top of the first double crochet. (Total: 24 stitches + 12 chain-1 spaces)

Round 3: Chain 1.
In the first stitch, work a single crochet.
In the next stitch, work another single crochet.
In the chain-1 space, create a bob stitch.
Continue this pattern around the circle.
Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. (Total: 36 stitches)

Round 4: Chain 1.
In the first stitch, work a single crochet in the back loop.
In the next stitch, work another single crochet in the back loop.
Around the bob stitch, work a front post single crochet.
Continue this pattern around the circle.
Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.

Continue this pattern for each subsequent round (Rounds 5 through 14) by following the specific stitch instructions provided for each round. The total stitch count and chain-2 spaces are indicated at the end of each round.

Complete Round 14 as follows: Chain 1.
Work 2 single crochet stitches into the same chain-2 space.
Then, work single crochet in the back loop for the next 36 stitches, including the double crochets and chain-1 spaces.

Repeat the pattern, working (2 single crochet, chain 1, 2 single crochet) in each chain-2 space around.

Finish the round by working 2 single crochet stitches in the first chain-2 space.
Join with a single crochet (which also counts as a chain-1 space) to the top of the first single crochet. (Total: 160 stitches + 4 chain-1 spaces)
