Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn
- Size J (6mm) hook
- (Note: You can choose any weight yarn with the appropriate hook size for your project.)
- Instructions are written in US stitch terms.
Special Stitches:
Popcorn (pc) – worked in the designated space: Make 4 double crochets, remove your hook from the loop, insert the hook from front to back through the first double crochet stitch, pick up the loop again, and pull it through the stitch. You have now completed a Popcorn stitch.
Picot (p) – To create a picot stitch, chain 3, and slip stitch into the previous single crochet. Insert your hook into the front loop of the single crochet and the leftmost vertical bar under the front loop of the same single crochet, yarn over, and pull through the vertical bar, front loop, and the loop on your hook. This action forms a Picot stitch.
(Note: Special stitches will be explained and illustrated again when you reach the respective points in the pattern.)
Notes:
The pattern begins with a magic ring (or adjustable ring). If you’re unfamiliar with this technique, there are plenty of online tutorials available to guide you. If you prefer not to use a magic ring, you can alternatively start Round 1 as follows: Chain 5, double crochet in the first chain stitch, chain 1, (double crochet, chain 1) 10 times, and then slip stitch to the fourth chain of your original chain 5. This will result in 12 double crochets and 12 chain-1 spaces.
When starting a new round with a different color, you can choose to use a standing stitch. For example, instead of slip stitching and chaining 3 to create the first double crochet, yarn over, insert your hook into the first stitch, and complete the double crochet as usual. (Tip: Placing your index finger over the slip-stitched loop and the yarn over on your hook while inserting the hook into the first stitch can be helpful.) However, if you prefer, you can also use the traditional method of slip stitching and chaining 3 to form the first double crochet.
Pattern
Round 1: Begin with a magic ring. Chain 4, then work (double crochet, chain 1) 11 times in the ring. Slip stitch to the third chain, and fasten off. (You’ll have 12 double crochets and 12 chain-1 spaces.)
Round 2: In each chain-1 space, work (popcorn, chain 2). Slip stitch to the top of the first popcorn stitch and fasten off. (12 popcorns and 12 chain-2 spaces)
Round 3: In each chain-2 space, work (2 single crochets, picot, 2 single crochets). Slip stitch to the first single crochet and fasten off. (48 single crochets and 12 picots)
Round 4: Working between the last single crochet and the first single crochets of each (2 single crochets, picot, 2 single crochets) group (right above the popcorn stitch), work (single crochet, chain 4) all around. Slip stitch to the first single crochet. Do not fasten off. (12 single crochets and 12 chain-4 spaces)
Round 5: Slip stitch into the first chain-4 space. Chain 3, then make 3 double crochets in the same space and complete a popcorn stitch (by inserting the hook into the top of the chain-3). Chain 2, then work another 4 double crochet popcorn stitch in the same space. Chain 2. In the next space and each space around, work (chain, chain 2, chain, chain 2). Slip stitch to the top of the first chain and fasten off. (24 chains and 24 chain-2 spaces)
Round 6: In any chain-2 space, work *(3 treble crochets, chain 2, 3 treble crochets). Working only in each of the chain spaces, work (2 double crochets), (2 half double crochets), (2 single crochets), (2 half double crochets), (2 double crochets). Repeat from * around. Slip stitch to the first treble crochet. Do not fasten off. (4 chain-2 spaces, 24 treble crochets, 16 double crochets, 16 half double crochets, 8 single crochets)
Round 7: Chain 3, then work 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 treble crochets. In the chain-2 space, work (3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets). Double crochet in each stitch around and (3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets) in each chain-2 space. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-3 and fasten off. (4 chain-2 spaces and 88 double crochets)
Round 8: In any double crochet, slip stitch, chain 1, and make 1 single crochet. Work 1 single crochet in each double crochet and 3 single crochets in each chain-2 space around. Slip stitch to the first single crochet and fasten off. (100 single crochets)
