Attaching the Strap to Your Bag

FASTEN OFF FOR BAG HERE –

If you wish to make your square larger before turning it into a bag, you can add more rounds using the traditional granny stitch. To do this, simply continue as before, increasing by one 3-double-crochet (3dc) cluster per side in each round. However, for the purpose of this tutorial, we’ll stick with one round of granny stitch.

Turning Your Granny Square into a Bag

Using the same hook size and yarn:

  1. Join yarn at the top of your bag, in the chain 2 corner space.

  2. Work on three sides only of your square — one side, the bottom, and the other side — leaving the top edge unworked (this will be the bag’s opening).

  3. Work single crochet (sc) in each stitch around these three sides.

  4. At each corner, work 2 sc into the corner chain-2 spaces.

  5. Continue for three rows total, turning after each row.

  6. Fasten off.

Crocheting the Back of the Bag

With the wrong side (WS) facing you, join yarn at the bottom corner.
Work sc across the bottom, chaining 1 and turning at the end of each row. You should have 20 stitches per row.
Continue in rows until this back panel folds over and meets the top of the sunflower square.
Fasten off.

🧵 How to Add a Lining to Your Crochet Bag

Lining your crochet bag helps it hold its shape and adds durability. Here’s a simple way to do it:

Use t-shirt material or another soft, flexible fabric.
Cut the lining slightly larger than your square (leaving a few centimeters on each side).

Hand sew the lining to the wrong side (WS) of your crochet piece.
Tuck the extra fabric edges under as you sew, avoiding edge-to-edge sewing, so you can crochet through the sides when you join the bag.

🧶 Joining the Sides of the Crochet Bag

Join yarn at the bottom fold of the bag.
Using sc, work evenly up the sides, inserting your hook through both the front and back panels.

Repeat this on the other side — start at the top this time and ensure you’re working on the right side (RS).
Weave in all ends securely.

🧵 Crocheting the Top of the Bag

To close and shape the top of your bag:

You’ll work 3 rounds of sc around the entire top (both front and back), joining them together.
Stitch count isn’t critical — just ensure your stitches are evenly spaced on both sides.
Join yarn at any corner and sc evenly around, going over the seams as needed

🌻 How to Make a Twisted Cord Strap

Measure the length you want your strap to be so that the bag sits at your hip.
Double that length, and cut 6 or more strands of yarn to that size.
Twist all strands tightly together (secure one end or have someone help you).
When tightly twisted, fold the strand in half — it will naturally twist into a cord.
Run your hand along the cord to smooth it out, then tie the free ends together.

🎀 Adding a Yarn Tassel

To add a decorative tassel:

Wrap yarn at least 20 times around a 4–5 inch piece of cardboard.
Thread yarn through the top and tie a secure knot.

Cut the bottom loops and wrap a separate piece of yarn about 3/4 inch below the top to form the tassel.
Hide the messy end of your twisted cord inside the tassel for a clean finish

🧷 Attaching the Strap

Sew the twisted ends of your strap into the top of the bag, going through the three single crochet rounds you made earlier.

Sew up and down several times through the stitches to secure it tightly.

With that, your Sunflower Square Bag is ready to go! 🌻 Whether you wear it to the farmers market or a sunny picnic, it’s sure to turn heads and spark conversations. And don’t forget to tag us in your makes — we’d love to see your version!

Happy Crocheting! 💛
